Florida Traffic Court Judges Dismiss 24,000 Red-Light Camera Cases

Two traffic court judges in Broward County, Fla., have dismissed some 24,000 pending red-light camera ticket cases totaling more than $6.3 million.

The judges ruled this week that the program violates Florida law.

Attorney Ted Hollander of Ticket Clinic told the South Florida Sun Sentinel his office argued for more than four years that the program was an improper delegation of police power. He says videos were sent to American Traffic Solutions in Arizona where employees did the screening.

Florida law says only law enforcement can issue violations.

Fort Lauderdale suspended its program March 6 after a traffic court judge said it violated state statutes.

Several other South Florida cities have suspended red-light programs. Hollywood spokeswoman Raelin Storey says the city is evaluating how to modify the program to align with state laws.
