Atlanta Public Schools is planning to mount cameras on school buses to catch drivers who illegally pass while the buses are stopped.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports Arizona-based American Traffic Solutions is planning to mount cameras on the side of APS buses. The cameras will automatically detect drivers who pass the stop arm when it is deployed and will capture video and still images.
ATS has also mounted cameras to buses in Gwinnett, Cobb, and Clayton County school buses, and buses in Marietta and Decatur as well.
Cobb County School District Transportation Director Rick Grisham said the number of drivers who illegally passed stopped buses dropped significantly after cameras were installed.
