Mobile, Ala., officials have unveiled a new public safety initiative that will allow police access to more than 2,000 surveillance cameras.
AL.com reports that as of July 23, the Mobile Police Department had access to over 2,000 live security camera feeds from the Mobile County School System, the Alabama Department of Transportation, Bel Air Mall and its own downtown camera network.
Officials say the access is a result of a partnership between police and participating businesses and schools.
Police Chief James Barber says the main purpose of the initiative is so that police can act quickly and respond whenever an active situation arises at one of the locations.
Authorities expect the operation to grow in terms of adding more partnerships and in ways of sharing live surveillance with other agencies.
