What a waste of time bill. Aren’t people just already doing this? It is common sense to give bikers space when passing. Also, who was just sitting behind a biker for miles if there was a no passing zone…no one!

Unfortunately drivers are not giving cyclist a safe passing distance. In some areas there is a confrontational environment brewing between cyclist and drivers. There are a small percentage of aggressive drivers that intentionally drive as close as they can to cyclists to intimidate them. With out a clear definition of what is a safe passing distance it is difficult to issue a ticket or file charges. In Ohio I was hit by a car’s rear view mirror a few years ago and yelled at by the driver for being on the road, it was a quite country road during an organized charity ride. The Highway patrol told me there was not much they could do because there was not any property damage nor injury, Ohio does not have a 3ft law. I was lucky but without recourse and I am fairly sure that drive had done the same thing to other cyclists. I would estimate I have a car come within 1-2ft when passing as few times a month during cycling season.

Unfortunately common sense does not equally common practice. Try riding a bike to work for a month in state without a 3ft rule. There is a small percentage of drivers who do not think bikes should be on the road and purposely drive as close as they can when passing. Without a safe distance passing law it is very hard to issues tickets or prosecute. Getting too close to another car may result in losing a rear view mirror. Getting too close to cyclist may result in loss of life
