Strong thunderstorms and tornadoes caused damage across parts of five Southern states Wednesday night and Thursday morning, killing two people and leaving some 180,000 people without power.
Local news outlets and the National Weather Service reported numerous tornadoes in Arkansas, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee and Kentucky that downed trees and power lines and damaged homes and buildings. In Washington County, Florida, in the Panhandle, two people died when their mobile home was destroyed, authorities said.
Tornadoes were confirmed near Mobile and Chilton County, Alabama, and Biloxi, Mississippi, and warnings were posted in central and north Alabama. Powerful winds damaged structures in Jackson and Benton, Mississippi, according to news reports.
The line of storms moved across the eastern U.S. Thursday, and more damage reports were expected.
