The Tenneesse Department of Commerce and Insurance secured a record $11.5 million for policyholders in 2022, after mediating complaints about insurers.
The department’s insurance services team mediated 3,249 complaints last year, resulting in numerous claims denials being overturned or additional benefits paid to consumers, TDCI said in a statement this week.
“Consumers often feel frustrated and overwhelmed dealing with insurance-related issues, and our dedicated consumer insurance services team is ready to assist at all times,” said Bill Huddleston, TDCI assistant commissioner.
The $11.5 million was the largest amount ever recovered for insureds by the department, TDCI noted.
Other states’ insurance departments have similar mediation programs. The South Carolina Department of Insurance announced in January that it had resolved some 4,500 complaints and obtained $10.3 million for policyholders in 2022.
