The Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance so far this year has secured more than $9.5 million for policyholders whose insurance claims had been denied, the department announced this week.
The payments, mostly from property insurers, are the result of mediation and restitution efforts by the department’s Consumer Insurance Services team and are on pace to surpass last year’s record-breaking haul of $17.5 million, TDCI said in a statement.
“Consumers who may feel frustrated or overwhelmed when dealing with insurance-related issues know they can contact our Consumer Insurance Services team for assistance and information about their insurance policies,” said TDCI Assistant Commissioner Bill Huddleston.
The mediation work is similar to department-led mediation in other states, proceedings that help keep some claims disputes out of litigation.
