Earthquake Victims Call for Quackenbush Impeachment

May 5, 2000

Victims of the 1994 Northridge earthquake have joined the fray over state Insurance Commissioner Chuck Quackenbush’s alleged misuse of his position, calling for his impeachment.

At a new conference Thursday, people whose homes were damaged in the quake complained that the California insurance department did nothing to help settle claims while insurance companies low-balled settlements or tied them up in court for years.

Quackenbush has admitted he allowed six insurers to contribute $11.6 million to an earthquake foundation he established in order to avoid fines potentially totaling $3 billion for the alleged mishandling of the claims. He has also admitted that none of the money went to the earthquake victims.
