Acting Insurance Commissioner J. Clark Kelso announced the award of 429 new earthquake retrofit grants to low- to moderate-income California homeowners in Fresno, Kern, Kings, Los Angeles, San Bernadino, San Mateo and Tulare counties. Retrofitting homes–which could include bolting homes to their foundations, installing automatic gas shut-off valves, repairing foundations to accommodate retrofitting, strapping hot water heaters, and installing earthquake resistant bracing systems for mobile homes–may reduce the cost of homeowners insurance for grantees and loan borrowers.
Earthquake retrofit grants are available to low- to moderate-income, owner-occupied, single-family households to retrofit their residential properties, including mobile homes, against quake damage. Eligible homeowners can apply for grants up to $4,600 for mobile homes and up to $17,000 for site built homes.
Although the California Department of Insurance (CDI) is not accepting applications at this time, it anticipates a new grant application period will open in February 2001. After the retrofit work has been completed for the 429 new grantees, the CDI will have funded the retrofitting of 1,184 homes in 24 high-risk, earthquake-prone counties. Funds for these programs were appropriated by SB 395, Statutes of 1995 and AB 1453, Statutes of 1999.
