NAMIC to Hold 107th Annual Convention Sept. 15-18

The 107th annual convention of the National Association of Mutual Insurance Companies (NAMIC) will take place Sept. 15-18, at the San Diego Marriott Hotel & Marina in San Diego.

The convention will celebrate the 250th anniversary of the American mutual insurance industry and pay tribute to the first successful company, The Philadelphia Contributionship for the Insurance of Houses from Loss by Fire. Both were founded in 1752 by Benjamin Franklin.

The convention expected to attract more than 1,700 participants, features special sessions targeted to the interests of property/ casualty insurance companies. Highlights include:

• Tom Von Essen, former Commissioner of the Fire Department of New York City, will share his experiences of 9/11, in the convention’s keynote address. A 31-year veteran, Von Essen was named commissioner by Mayor Rudy Giuliani in 1996. He was charged with the responsibility of preparing the department for the challenges of protecting life and property in the 21st century.
• Concurrent sessions of interest to the property/casualty, farm and crop insurers will be held Monday and Tuesday afternoon.
• Operational Excellence is the topic of Tuesday’s guest speaker, Robert Bailey, the recently retired CEO and board chairman of State Auto Insurance Cos., Columbus, Ohio. His book, Plain Talk About Leadership: Silver Bullets for Success, is fast becoming a core reference on the subject. The program will highlight the core competencies required to lead strong organizations, focusing on critical issues such as: providing world-class customer service; the importance of effective leadership; integrity in the financial management and reporting process; and the factors required for companies to thrive in the changing marketplace.
• A panel discussion on “The Future of Insurance Regulation,” takes place Wednesday morning. Panelists are Joel Ario, Insurance Commissioner for the State of Oregon, Robert Mackin, executive director, National Conference of Insurance Legislators (NCOIL), and Robert Gordon, Special Counsel to the House Committee on Financial Services.

Eighty-six vendors will exhibit their products and services at more than 90 booths.
