November 6, 2002

Democrat John Garamendi, Calif.’s Insurance Commissioner-Elect, released an official statement today (Nov. 6, 2002) in regards to his victory. Garamendi won with an estimated 47 percent of the vote, defeating Republican candidate Gary Mendoza, who garnered an approximate 42 percent of the vote.

“I want to thank the people of California for their support yesterday, and for giving me the opportunity to once again serve the people of this great state. Their confidence in me is inspiring, and I pledge to do everything in my power to help families, businesses, and all consumers with their insurance needs. Having served once before, I know the importance of this office, and will rebuild the Department of Insurance into the best consumer protection agency in the country.

“There are many challenges facing the insurance industry in this state, and I look forward to taking them on. We need to provide high quality, affordable health care for all Californians, and I will work to create and enact a universal health insurance plan. We must guarantee consumer privacy by enacting sensible regulations to protect consumers. Finally, we must develop a healthy insurance market to provide the insurance we need to grow California’s economy.”
