IBA West Names Payan as CEO

September 1, 2004

Effective Sept. 1, Clark Payan assumes the role of chief executive officer of IBA West, a regional trade association that represents independent insurance brokers and agents in California, Washington, Oregon and Alaska.

“I am delighted to welcome Payan to this new leadership role,” said IBA West President Andrew J. Valdivia, CPCU ARM. “Clark has served us very well as president of IBA West Service Corporation since returning to IBA West in 1999. He has worked closely with our current leadership team and we are fortunate to have him provide such a smooth leadership transition for the organization.”

Payan succeeds Jerry O’Kane who retires Sept. 1 after 22 years of service to the organization. “We are also fortunate to have O’Kane continue as a consultant working on advocacy issues,” said Valdivia.

“I welcome this opportunity to continue the legacy of a member focused organization created by Jerry,” said Payan. “I know the history of the organization and we have a clear plan for the future.”

As president of IBA West Service Corporation, Payan’s responsibilities include management of existing IBA West Service Corporation programs and services, and research and development of new association products and services. His duties also include the coordination of the IBA West strategic planning process.

Payan began his insurance career in 1979 with Payan-Stitt Corporation, an independent insurance agency operated by his family located in Palos Heights, Illinois. After several years as an account executive with Payan-Stitt, Payan moved to Denver, Colorado and subsequently held positions in the underwriting and marketing departments of Aetna Life & Casualty PFSD.

In 1986, Payan relocated to San Francisco, California and served as agency services director for the Independent Insurance Agents & Brokers of California. He returned to Payan-Stitt in 1988 and in 1991 Payan-Stitt consolidated with Wm. H. Thompson & Company to form Payan, Alberts & Thompson, Ltd.

Payan served as president and chief operating officer of Payan, Alberts & Thompson, Ltd. until December 1998. In January 1999, he returned to the Bay Area and IBA West.
