Great article Laurie. One thing I would add is the one step before even asking the questions in the article. That is to buy insurance. How many of these people have no insurance to even turn to. I heard on the news last night that a majority of the folks in the mobile homes that burned didn’t have any insurance. Folks, we live in a powder keg here in CA, time to pull your heads out of the sand and act responsibly. For those of you who don’t have insurance now, I would find your nearest independent agent and buy some right away. And for all of you others who have purchased homeowner’s insurance, take a look at your coverage limits. If you are insuring your home for anything under $200 sq ft in CA, you are underinsured. Don’t let some agent tell you that the ERC endorsement will suffice. It will not.

Some company’s have this in their wording. State Farm does as to Travelers. So, be sure and let people know that their deductible might apply even if they have no damage.

From one that has 34 years in the insurance business I found your article to be well written and very easy to understand. Thank-you. Perhaps some of the local news papers should pick it up and publish it as well.
    Thanks again,

What did the insurance company pay a month for your living expenses?

I was unable to stay in my primary residence during covered repair so I stayed in a vacation home in another state. The insurance company maintains that I have no “Additional Living Costs”. Is that correct?

Any thoughts on insured’s option to live where they want while they are displaced? Say an insured lives in Montana and has a fire during the winter. They say they would rather live in Scottsdale while their home is repaired, presumably the same type of living arrangements will be more expensive in Scottsdale. Does the insurance company owe it?

We lost are house and all are stuff Nov.26, 2012 and was reimbursed ALE for 3 weeks. We still live in a small motel room that is more like a half-way house (my family of 4). State Farm keeps saying no to ALE and we have paid all the money they gave us for lost property to pay the $199 weekly rate. My family is suffering in such a small place with next to no ammendities. My 6 year old told me that if we arnt out of that small place by her big sisters b-day in June she “wont like me anymore”. How sad is that?

This is a terrible shame. Everyone knows that you were the one that started the fire. You wanted to ”get out of the state” because law enforcement and child protective services were after you, drugs and the disgusting ”videos” you were filming of your wife, surfaced all over the internet. So just keep up your pity party and frauding your insurance company, the truth will eventually surface.

The Additional Living Expense in the policy says “reasonable” increase in expense. And with the 20% standard, and only 25% of that per month…if I had $400,000 of dwelling coverage, does this mean I can spend $20,000 a month in additional living expense? This does not seem “reasonable” as I am able to find a really nice place for $1,500 a month.

Does an insurance policy HAVE to have Additional Living Expense and Fair Rental Value?
