Insurance Brokers and Agents of the West (IBA West), awarded the Ramsden/Sullivan Memorial Award to Robert B. Suhr and slated its officers and directors for 2010 at its annual meeting.
Suhr is a Santa Clara, Calif., independent insurance agent and is an association past president and industry leader. He is recognized as an association leader, a renowned expert in fund-raising and for his relentless support of open government. In 1972, he served as president of the association, then known as the Independent Insurance Agents Association of California. While serving in his numerous leadership positions with the association on both the local and state levels, he was a visionary with his advocacy for insurance transparency.
Raised in Ohio, Suhr is a World War II veteran who remained in California after the end of the war. In 1951, with his wife, Juliette, by his side, he started his insurance business out of the family home. As the business began to prosper, he recognized it was time to move into town where he opened his first office, and Robert B. Suhr and Co. took formal roots.The firm he started almost 60 years ago continues his legacy with a strong Bay Area presence, a commitment to professionalism and transparency, and is known as Suhr Risk Services of California.
John Suhr of Suhr Risk Services of California accepted the award at the annual meeting for his father, who was unable to attend due to illness.

The following IBA Silicon Valley leaders were installed:
President Mary Jo Gleaves of J. Morey Co.; Vice-President Veronica “Roni” Castro of Mission Counties Insurance Agency Inc.; and board members Dean R. Fletcher of Mission Counties Insurance Agency Inc., Tamrah Pfyl of Archway Insurance Brokers, and Lisa Salciccia of Leavitt Pacific Insurance Brokers.
