Interesting philosophy. Does that mean it is okay to drink and drive as long as the driver is not “drunk”? How about sex behind the wheel as long as you are not enjoying it too much? Sorry, Idaho. Just not cool.

Unbelievable. As a motorcycle rider I see these texters all over the road. Riders killed while sitting at a stop light and get rear ended by a distracted person texting. A member in our group granddaughter was killed while the 2 year old was in the arms of her mother and in a cross walk. The 18 year old driver was texting. I would much prefer a stronger law, if texting and involved in an accident. You cannot regulate all distractions; but texting and driving is absurd.

I had to read this twice to ensure that I was not misreading. When people’s lives are at stake there is little room for compromise. This bill in essence is meaningless. We need people to wake up and realize that hand held or hands free driving is not an activity that leaves room for multitasking.

Oh, I get it to appease the idiots who are for texting and driving, this genius has written a law that will apparently please both sides of the issue. He does not realize that there is only one side. If you text and drive, you are distracted. Idaho, please get with it.

    Dear Rep. Marv Hagedorn:
The saying goes “Better safe than sorry”. It is not “better sorry than safe”. Hopefully this bill goes nowhere.

Just when people, industry and even government are trying to save lives by educating others about the dangers of distracted driving and especially texting while driving, this Bill is unconscionable.

With all due respect to Rep. Hagedorn, he’s way off base with his proposal to allow texting while driving. Has he not read and understood the studies that show that texting while driving is as distracting as being impaired by alcohol? And how does he think the State Police will be able to enforce his proposed law?
I suggest Rep. Hagedorn look at the texting ban other states have put on their books and get Idaho in the same situation. I, for one, would not want to be driving in Idaho when a driver near me is distracted by texting while driving, particularly by the youngest drivers among us!
Look out if Rep. Hagedorn’s proposal is actually enacted!!

Not distracted? Text and Drive specifically was the cause of 16,141 highway deaths from 2001 to 2007 and over 200,000 non fatal accidents last year. For every 6 seconds a driver spends texting, 4.6 of those seconds are with their eyes off the road, which makes texting the most dangerous cell phone activity anyone can engage in while operating a 5,000 pound piece of steel and glass. If technology is going to help, it should get all driver’s eyes back on the road where they belong.

I decided to do something about distracted driving after my three year old daughter was nearly run down right in front of me by a texting mom. Instead of expensive software with recurring fees that locks down phones and alienates the user (especially teens), I built a tool called OTTER that is a simple GPS based, texting auto reply app for smartphones. It also silences call ringtones while driving unless you have a bluetooth enabled. Its an easy way for any user (NOT just teens) to manage that text and drive temptation.
