Montana’s Department of Agriculture is reminding farmers that there is a state hail insurance program, and that the deadline to purchase the state insurance is fast approaching, news outlets in the state are reporting.
State officials are noting that crops generally are about two weeks behind where they usually are this year, and that the longer they stay in the field the more likely it becomes that storm weather will roll in and do crop damage.
The deadline for purchase is Aug. 15.
Montana is the only state to have a hail insurance program. The state offers policies as an adjunct to private policies. The program was begun in 1917.
So far this year, there have been fewer claims to the state program than in many past years, the news reports say. Officials estimate that about 100 claims have been filed this year. That compares with an average of 250 claims in years past.
