Settlement Reached in California Roller Coaster Injury

August 29, 2011

Knott’s Berry Farm has reached a confidential settlement with a 12-year-old boy who was injured on its Xcelerator roller coaster when a cable broke and ripped into his leg.

The Los Angeles Times reported that Kyle Wheeler of Weaverville and his father, Russell, were sitting in the coaster’s front row in 2009 when the cable snapped.

Kyle underwent multiple surgeries, as well as physical therapy, before he could walk again. He has since recovered, the family’s lawyer, Art Morgan, said Friday.

Morgan said the settlement covers the cost of medical care and the family’s emotional distress.

A state investigation concluded the ride hadn’t been properly maintained.

Knott’s declined to discuss the settlement. But park spokeswoman Jennifer Blazey said Knott’s maintenance crews work hard to ensure rider safety
