“Proponents don’t expect a flood of tickets in the coming weeks because they expect most motorists to comply like they do with the state law requiring the use of seat belts.
“‘This law has nothing to do with numbers of citations issue [sic]. It’s about safety — like the seat belt law,’ said Maj. Keith Barnett, traffic division commander at the Montgomery Police Department.”
Assuming a median fine, Nevada has already raked in about three quarters of a million dollars from its 4,500 tickets. Oh, but this is all about safety. It has nothing to do with “numbers of tickets.” Yeah, right.
Compliance requires a learning curve, just like with seat belts. As of July 1, my area now treats texting while driving as a primary offense, and cell phone usage while driving as secondary. Both will be primary in July of next year. After the first 30 days it appears that the restrictions are pretty much being ignored.
