Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer wants President Barack Obama to declare the area around the Yarnell Hill fire a disaster area.
Brewer sent a letter to Obama Tuesday after assessments showed 109 homes were destroyed and 23 others were damaged.
Brewer wants a major disaster declaration along with access to a federal assistance program for individuals.
Approval of Brewer’s request would bring long-term federal recovery programs to Yavapai County that will help survivors and businesses that didn’t have adequate insurance.
Sens. John McCain and Jeff Flake sent a letter urging Obama to swiftly approve the request.
