A judge has approved settlements of lawsuits that claimed dozens of students were molested at Miramonte Elementary School in Los Angeles and the district has made the first of what may become $30 million in payouts.
KNBC-TV reported the judge on Wednesday approved 61 settlements, although dozens of additional lawsuits remain unresolved.
The Los Angeles Unified School District has made two payouts. Some of the money will cover therapy and medical bills for children in two families and the rest will be put aside until they become adults for a total settlement of around $1 million.
More than 60 students contend that they were molested by former teachers Mark Berndt and Martin Springer. Prosecutors contend that Berndt fed some children semen-laced cookies.
