California Sinkhole Leaves Citizens Unscathed

March 4, 2014

Ventura County sheriff’s deputies say Southern California traffic was safely diverted around a 20-foot-wide sinkhole at an Oxnard intersection.

The 10-foot-deep hole opened Sunday at Ventura Road and Hemlock Street. Investigators told the Ventura County Star it was probably caused by rain.

Fill work continued throughout the day on Monday.

Capt. Dave Wareham says there was some concern a traffic signal would fall and rupture a gas line but workers were able to stabilize it.

Traffic in all directions was diverted.
