California Commissioner Orders Another Insurance Cancellation Moratorium for Wildfire

September 22, 2022

California Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara on Thursday ordered insurance companies to preserve residential insurance coverage following Gov. Gavin Newsom’s latest wildfire emergency declarations.

Lara’s order shields policyholders within the wildfire perimeter or in adjacent ZIP codes of the Mosquito and Fairview fires in Riverside, Placer, and El Dorado counties from insurance non-renewal or cancellation for one year from the date of the governor’s Sept. 8 declaration regardless of whether they suffered a loss.

This follows moratorium orders Lara issued in mid-September.

The latest moratorium order includes 40 new ZIP codes in Riverside, Placer, and El Dorado counties, affecting over 236,000 wildfire survivors. Consumers can go to the Department of Insurance website to see if their ZIP code is included in the moratorium.
