How to Find New Markets

By | January 27, 2003

For the past seven years, the Insurance Journal has published the annual Directory of Excess, Surplus and Specialty Markets. This issue is a resource for independent agents and brokers to help them find the markets they need. The print edition is published twice a year in January and July. The print version of the Directory is regional in that we only publish markets available in the states the magazine covers. Six years ago, we put the Directory of Excess, Surplus and Specialty Markets on our Web site.

Online, the Directory is national and interactive. An agent can search by the coverage and the state they need. Go to www.insurancejournal.com, on the left side under Resources‚ click on Find a Market‚ and just follow the instructions, type in your state and the coverage you need. You can automatically be linked to the market through e-mail or the market’s Web site. You can also search by the market’s name. If the market has underwriting authority, a small pen‚ icon appears next to the market’s name. The listing will tell you in which states this market writes the coverage. The market’s address, phone, fax, e-mail and their license number is included in their listing. This is a free service for our readers and also a free service for the markets that list.

The markets listed can access their listing 24 hours a day/seven days a week to update and change their listing. This keeps the Directory as current as possible. We also publish a Directory of Programs in print and online. Here an agent can find a program by class of business instead of coverage. We also provide forums for Hard to Find Markets, Agency Management issues and others. You can find the forums under Resources‚ on our home page.

We need your help, though. Let us know what markets you need, your experience, good or bad with a particular market, or what ever you want us to know. We need your feedback to make the Insurance Journal the best source you have. Our job is to help you find solutions to your problems by providing you with useful information.

You just need to tell us what kinds of information you’re looking for. So e-mail me at mwells@insurancejournal.com and let me know or e-mail anyone at the Insurance Journal. The Insurance Journal is your magazine and Web site.
