This article is excellent for hotel/motel’s. I had never expereince bed bugs till I visited Moab Utah on the Labor Day weekend. The staff seem confused, and didn’t know what to do other than say over and over – “We haven’t had any bugs all summer.” This was an expensive and well-known motel. I had woke up in the night and put my hand on my back – splattt! I turned on the light and my hand was covered in blood. My friend found over two dozen bites, plus three living bugs sucking me. Needless to say I was horrified. The next night they put us in the best suite. Again bed bugs. The staff never offered medical attention, free rooms, or advice to get rid of them. There was no mention about washing our stuff. Unfortunately the staff also told us that bed bugs never travel in luggage or on clothing, nor could bed bugs go from room to room. Dispute out best efforts to clean everything, my apartment is infested just two weeks later. My car has had to be fumigated, I have over 200 bites now, my beautiful organic natural home and clothing has been ruined with pesticides and hot water, plus I am sick from all the chemicals. A few simple things like offering us a complimentary future stay, and most importantly offering medical assistance (I immediately had reactions, and I am going to have lifetime scarring), plus offered laundry service I don’t think my apartmnent would be infested. I use to love this wonderful motel. Historic, quiet neigbhorhood, and friendly staff. I use to brag to friends about it. Now I am anger, hurt, and traumized beyond words. I have considered contacting an attorney. All because someone brought in bed bugs. Oh – the best part of the expereince was the staff’s comment that it “was them Europeans. They are a dirty people.” Not the kind of thing that encourages visitors.
I hope hotels and motels read your article and take it seriously. It is excellent and this is from a guest’s viewpoint.

I am “A recent bedbugged gues” with My Bedbug trauma. A follow-up. I now have over 400 bed bug bites. The Grand County Health Department visited the motel. An extriminator had been called, but only did basic spraying. The Healthy Inspector ran his fingers along a mattress edge and five bed bugs jumped out. That room had been rented nightly for three weeks after my bed bug attack. Who knows how many other people had bed bugs bite or they took home? The final outcome – the entire family suite had to be gutted. Literally! The entire room was one of the worst infestations the Health Inspector had seen. Everything was stripped to the baseboard, re-carpeted, and repainted, and new mattresses and furniture. As for me, I am proceeding with a suit against the motel. During the past five weeks after I was so badly bitten, only one agency/person asked if I was okay, and the extent of the bites. That person was the County Health Department Inspector. The Motel and its staff has not once contacted me, or at the time even asked if I was okay. My life has been a living nightmare and I have gone to hell and back. I am covered with bites and scarring. I have nightmares, can’t sleep, and now sleep with a light on. I lay in the bed shaking and crying in fear of the next night’s blood feeding by the bugs. For a week I crawled on the kitchen table to sleep. My beautiful clothes are ruined from hot water and dryers, I have spent not just hundreds, but over a thousand plus, just trying to eridicate these creatures. My fun weekend at Moab is now nightmare memories. This is an ordeal I never should have endured, and I am very vocal about the motel problems and am actively broadcasting it. A bit of kindness on the part of the hotel staff in being concerned about my welfare, and telling me the dangers, and offering me laundry service would have prevented this horrible incident. This is a living hell!
