It is tragic to see a company with a significant history such as PW suffer such a failure. As consumers we must be aware of the impact of the loss of any small company on us all. THEY are the companies that contribute to a competetive u/w market. THEY are the thorn in the lions paw.
Let’s hope THEY survive.
Is this not another example of the “Walmart-ing of America”. Do you remember major companies like INA, AETNA, Commercial Union, the Home, and Wassau? How about Rhode Island Companies like American Universal, Narraganset Bay, Pawtucket Mutual, and now add Providence Washington. Which companies will be left in another 20 years?
This is really a sad time for all the quality people who make up PW. I have full confidence that management will honor their obligations and assist the consumer in providing replacement markets.
I would hope that the Department of Business Regulation in conjunction with the company itself will continue their good work in finding a potential buyer for this company.
As someone who worked at PW for many years I see their demise as indicative of nothing other than poor management. It suffered from a senior staff that sought self promotion over good business practices. They also spent millions chasing the technology rabbit and implementing technologies too expensive and inappropriate for the size of the company. Enron on a smaller scale.
Dear Hiatt, I see you posted this 18 years ago but wanted to ask if you know who would I contact as my Mother just died and she was a long time employee with PW in Texas and was getting a monthly premium/pension. I don’t know where or whom to contact regarding her account. Do you know who could help me please? I live in New York and trying to handle all her affairs has been difficult, from so far away.
What a terrible shame for this to happen to a company with such a storied history. As an outsider who worked for some of this mnmgnt team with another carrier (which is no longer), I would assume that much of it’s demise was due to poor management as was stated earlier. I’m guessing the officers jumped ship a few months ago. My question is, who would hire these folks after running company after company into the ground?
The failing of a company is the result of the management. Others in the same space are not only surviving but thriving. I can possibly assist some of the Prov Wash employees in finding other opportunities. Email me at rdresources@aol.com
Small company, “thorn in lions paw”? You cannot be serious. PW burned some bridges here in VA. I would have to agree w/ the earlier post by an ex-PW employee and their view on management. Some funny stuff came from that place. As for those who hope it will survive, it will, only it will be called One Beacon now. Probably for the best as OB/WM are good at what they do-re-tooling unprofitable companies.
i would like to find out who is the owner of the building as am an Architect that work on the drawings and have a detailed drawing for the tower. thank you
This was my first job. At 14 yrs of age, I was exposed to the insurance industry and I loved it. I am the agent I am now because of that exposure and it’s sad that this company went under. I miss those days and the parties at the Biltmore. It was a great company, but it’s just too bad that it couldn’t adapt in order to survive.

Dear Pam I see you posted this back in 2018 but wanted to ask if you know who would I contact as my Mother just died (one month ago today and she was 85) but she was a long time employee with PW in Texas and was getting a monthly premium/pension. I don’t know where or whom to contact regarding her account. Do you know who could help me please? I live in New York and trying to handle all her affairs has been difficult, from so far away.
Hello any former PW Employees, Does anyone know whoever took over PW I could contact as my Mother just died (one month ago today and she was 85) but she was a long time employee with PW in Texas and was getting a monthly premium/pension. Dennis mentioned American Universal in his comment. It brings to mind the question regarding PW: where did all the money go?

I’ve been in the business over 54 years and the loss of PW is a very sad. So much for tradition.

Reliance, Kemper, GRE, Legion, PHICO, General Accident. These were substantial companies, some historic. What’s going on here?
