NYC Launches Campaign to Ensure Safe, Reliable Elevators

March 7, 2008

New York City is launching a campaign to enforce safe and reliable elevator service in residential buildings.

The Buildings Department says the campaign will include daily penalties for elevator violations and publicly shaming landlords of buildings with the most problems.

Buildings Commissioner Patricia Lancaster says in a statement that the lack of access to working elevators in buildings presents “a major safety risk that those living in elevator buildings should not have to face.”

The worst buildings are scattered throughout Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn and the Bronx. They are listed on the Buildings Department
Web site.
