Levene Receives Brazilian Honor

May 22, 2007

Lloyd’s Chairman, Lord Peter Levene, has been awarded the “Personality of the Year” Award by the Brazilian Embassy and the Brazilian Chamber of Commerce in the UK.

Lloyd’s noted that the “award recognizes the contribution to strengthening economic-trade links between Brazil and the United Kingdom.” He received the award at the Dorchester Hotel along with the Brazilian winner, Antônio Francisco de Lima Neto, President of the Banco do Brasil.

The winners are chosen by the Council of the Brazilian Chamber of Commerce in the UK. The award recognizes Lord Levene’s commitment to the insurance and re-insurance industry in Brazil.

In accepting the award, Levene noted: “From a business perspective I believe there are strong reasons for optimism. The Brazilian economy has stabilized and is now growing at a healthy rate once again. Increased investment, a new openness and economic reform will ensure that continues. I am constantly impressed when I read about the innovation in Brazil’s natural resources sector, the dynamic growth of niche areas like private aviation and the hi-tech sector, and indeed increasing investment from other emerging markets such as China.”

He thanked the Brazilian Embassy “for their generosity,” and indicated his efforts to “support and to boost the relationship between Brazil and the UK are, I feel, only just beginning. It means a lot to me and I can assure you that it gives me, and my colleagues at Lloyd’s, a very welcome boost and inspiration to continue the work we have started.”
