President George W. Bush recognized Roy Bubeck, president and CEO of Badger Mutual Insurance Co., as a “soldier in the army of compassion” during a speech in Milwaukee, Wis. earlier this month.
Bush lauded Bubeck for making “a difference in other people’s lives.” He’s assumed his responsibility as a CEO in this way: he offers paid leave to employees to go out and help in a neighborhood. He’s encouraged people in his company to mentor a child. He’s encouraged people to go tutor, so that a child can succeed in life.
The president’s speech focused on his USA Freedom Corps initiative to engage all Americans in service to their neighbors and their nation. President Bush has personally recognized individuals around the country, such as Bubeck, who are answering the call to volunteer service.
Since becoming president and CEO of Badger Mutual Insurance Co. in 1997, Bubeck has worked to create a culture of service throughout the company. Throughout the year, Badger Mutual Insurance Co. encourages employees to mentor and tutor local school children, volunteer at the local Boys and Girls Club, and participate in the annual Spring Neighborhood Clean-Up.
Employees also participate in company-wide competitions to help raise funds for the United Way and regularly donate food and toys to women and children in need within the community. In 2001, Bubeck initiated a service project among employees to help make their office neighborhood more safe and secure, helping to put lights up on the streets and on resident’s homes and walking door to door making sure residents had working smoke detectors.
