Spokesman: N.D. Gov. Hoeven Close to Choosing Poolman Replacement

October 9, 2007

A spokesman for Gov. John Hoeven said that six people have been interviewed for the job of North Dakota insurance commissioner and the appointment announcement is expected soon.

The governor’s choice will serve out the 15 months left on the four-year term of former Commissioner Jim Poolman, who resigned Aug. 31. Both Hoeven and Poolman are Republicans.

Poolman’s deputy, Rebecca Ternes, is now serving as North Dakota’s top insurance regulator, and has said she is not interested in the permanent appointment. Poolman quit to become an insurance industry consultant.

“I think it’s pretty narrowed down, and we’re close to making a decision,” said Don Canton, the governor’s spokesman.

Hoeven has interviewed Doug Goehring, a Menoken farmer and two-time Republican candidate for agriculture commissioner; Fargo attorneys Adam Hamm and Berly Nelson; Dana Flanders, a former insurance underwriter in Fargo; Becky Bowen, a former director of the Northern Plains Ballet, in Bismarck; and Blake Krabseth, a Minot real estate agent and GOP activist who has run twice for the North Dakota Senate in the past five years. He lost both times to Democrat Tom Seymour.

Hoeven’s choice will have to run for re-election in 2008 to keep the insurance commissioner’s job.
