The Professional Insurance Agents Association of Ohio, Inc. (PIA) Internship Program, recently announced that its 2008 program for insurance industry interns was operational. On May 28 the PIA welcomed 12 interns hosting a three-day orientation program. PIA’s internship program offers 10 and half weeks of hands-on experience in both an insurance agency and within an insurance company headquarters.
According to the PIA, as a large percentage of the industry’s workforce nears retirement, one of the main goals of the program is to attract new talent to the industry and generate interest in the industry among young people. PIA developed the internship program as a way of making an investment in the industry’s future.
The PIA internship program is designed to expose college students to the wide variety of career opportunities in the insurance industry, an industry oftentimes overlooked by up-and-coming young professionals.
“Insurance is the fourth largest industry in the state of Ohio, and yet I’m not aware of an insurance and risk management curriculum offered at any of Ohio’s universities or colleges,” said PIA President Terry Kelso. “Our industry has flown under the radar for a while and once people learn about it, they are shocked by the opportunities available and the earning potential.”
During the 10-week program, PIA interns are completely immersed in the insurance industry, gaining valuable experience at both an insurance company and insurance agency. They are responsible for special projects at both the company and agency, which they present at the end of the program.
The program began in 2006. Seven of the 16 interns have accepted jobs in the industry.
Once their internship is complete, PIA assists interns with their job search, whether it be with a letter of recommendation or a lead on a possible job. Resumes are kept on file and PIA actively follows up with past interns in an effort to get them into the insurance workforce.
