Ascension Insurance Appoints Harris General Counsel

Kansas City, Mo.-based Ascension Insurance, Inc. has announced the appointment of P. Stephen Harris as its general counsel. Founded in August 2007, Ascension has garnered an initial $50 million in private equity funds to pursue a consolidation strategy focused on acquiring recognized regional agencies with $7 to $40 million in revenue. The company said it is expected to grow to $200 million with a nationwide footprint within five years. Ascension has, within its first year, completed the acquisition of Bryant Wharton of Atlanta, Ga.,; Pan American Insurance Agency of Pasadena, Calif.; and Employers Mutual, Inc. of Stuart, Fla.

In his new position, Harris will be responsible for managing all aspects of the company’s legal affairs. In addition, he will oversee all legal activities related to Ascension’s acquisition of insurance agencies and employee benefits firms. His experience includes over 30 years of private practice and corporate legal experience, most recently as general counsel for DeLaval, Inc., where he was responsible for overseeing and directing all legal matters for DeLaval and its U.S. subsidiaries.

Harris also managed the company’s global and local insurance programs as well as human resources and safety and regulatory functions. Harris also brings significant acquisitions experience to Ascension, managing all the legal and due diligence activities for 23 acquisitions and 14 divestitures since 1989.
