Smith Named Missouri Insurance Agents’ Person of the Year

Dennis Smith of Columbia, Mo., has been honored as the Missouri Association of Insurance Agents’ Insurance Person of the Year. The award was given at MAIA’s annual Leadership Conference on July 22.

Smith received the award in acknowledgement of his 40-year career in the insurance industry, during which he served as an independent agent, a member of the Missouri House of Representatives and the Senate, and the CEO of the state’s top workers’ compensation provider.

Smith served as president and chief executive officer of Missouri Employers Mutual from its inception in 1994 through June 2009. His insurance career began in 1967, and in addition to working for companies, he has owned his own independent insurance agency. Smith was elected to the Missouri House of Representatives in 1978 and then to the Missouri Senate.

Smith served two terms as a company representative on the MAIA Board of Directors. In addition, he has served on the boards of several other organizations in the industry and in his community. He currently chairs the Show-Me State Games Steering Committee.

Founded in 1899, the Missouri Association of Independent Agents is the oldest and largest association of independent agents in Missouri, representing some 4,000 independent agents, brokers and their employees.

Headquartered in Columbia, Mo., Missouri Employers Mutual is the state’s larges provider of workers’ compensation insurance.
