Kemper, UnumProvident Form Strategic Alliance

July 10, 2001

Kemper Insurance Companies announced a strategic alliance with UnumProvident Corporation and Gallagher Bassett Services Inc. that will offer employers an alternative for meeting their Integrated Disability Management (IDM) needs. Through the combined efforts of these industry leaders, the companies will offer an unbundled solution to the growing number of corporate customers wishing to integrate the management of their group disability and workers’ compensation coverages.

The companies agree that any IDM offering to unbundled customers must be flexible enough to accommodate their unique needs. This includes providing the ability to accommodate multiple carrier choices in the process.

In addition to working through this alliance, the companies will continue to have the ability to partner with other organizations on related IDM offerings.

Kemper will provide the workers’ comp coverage and the unbundled workers’ comp claims management through Gallagher Bassett Services Inc., a Third Party Administrator (TPA). UnumProvident will offer the employer’s disability coverages as well as manage the related claims. GENEX Services Inc., a subsidiary of UnumProvident, will also provide the alliance with case management, return to work programs, and cost containment options.

While Kemper is already a leading provider of bundled disability insurance and integrated occupational and non-occupational claim programs, this alliance allows Kemper to expand its product offerings to the unbundled client.

The benefits of this new unbundled IDM approach include a single point of entry for claims reporting, integrated case management and one source of information for workers’ comp and disability claims analysis.

The sales organizations of all the companies will remain responsible for developing these opportunities with the brokerage and consultant communities.
