I say leave your political views out of underwriting. Pretty soon you will get a discount if your gay or a member of the ACLU. I am sick of progressives like Peter Lewis of Progressive Insurance Company telling me how to live. We will see how they feel about going green when the cap and trade goes into effect making everyones electric bills go to $500. or gas goes to $4.00 all because of excessive taxes in the name of social engineering. Tell me how green you are then.

The insurance industry has done a good job of addressing the unique nature of green buildings including the upgrades and processes required to go “green.” However, the Marsh report(s) indicate that the casualty markets have yet to come out with products specifically addressing the risks contractors face in the construction of such buildings. More and more, contractors are pursuing accreditation by organizations such as the GBCI (LEED-AP) which could hold them to a higher standard of care when working on projects that promise certification, reduced energy consumption, healthier environments or any other “benefit” of green buildings. Without reviewing specific contract language, many construction companies will be involved in claims related to these new exposures that may not relate to bodily injury or property damage.

It’s more than a political view when considering the “green” movement. Reduced energy consumption and a healthier environment are at the top of my list. This isn’t a “socialist” issue but an environmental one. Get on board Bill, you can’t win this one so you might as well join up!
Now, please go hug a tree :)
