The Insurance industry must force the issue, creating mandates, on the proper screening of vestibular issues prior to play in helping reduce injury. Recent research shows that on field injury is more of a vestibular issue rather than coup contra coup concussion. Ignoring the symptoms related to poor orthodontics, necks strength asymmetry, inner ear and cerviogenic headache is a major mistake. The relationship between the vestibular system and cervical spine has not been properly investigated, due to NFL research. New data shows a direct relationship with jaw position and the cervical spine. NFL research has ignored this crucial element of player safety and its costing the insurance industry dearly.

Wow Mark, you sound a lot like a doctor with your description of these issues. I think it all goes back to how players were taught by coaches on proper tackling techniques from grade school through college. The habits are ingrained and it is hard to re-teach in the pros. There is also a false sense of security with the modern helmut and equipment. They think they can tackle as hard as they want and no problem. Players are bigger, faster and hit harder than 15-20 years ago. It doesn’t take that much to get a concussion.
