Smarter CEOs of HI cos should/ will plan as follows:

    a. Repeal of ACA is inevitable. Assume it will happen within 6 months.

    b. HI CEOs will be called on to lower costs through innovation, and that will result from legislation they need to push for, and present to Congress and state legislators, one by one.

    c. HI CEOs need to re-establish high risk pools, with innovative ideas to control costs, not subsidize them as the govt did under ACA.

It would be nice if IJ would just report the facts and leave their bias slant out of it. Or did I miss the story that CNN purchased IJ?
We all know (some won’t admit) that obamacare was and is a big flop. Adverse selection caused it to be costly for both the insurers and the taxpayers. This is why the carriers want out or want to raise premiums. President TRUMP wants to fix it, but the dems won’t play nice. TRUMP cannot withhold the payments that are do, they are part of the law. TRUMP understands business, something most dems don’t get. Like Obama, dems figure we can print or borrow more money to cover losses.

Jack, when you have a Progressive law passed in a totally partisan way, lie to the American People ad nauseum, it is bound to fail.

I am with Polar on this. The “mandate” should go to the insurance market to come up with plans the American people want and need and at an affordable cost. Let them design plans, give freedom of choice on what people want and have easy to use websites to apply on. We also need Health Pools to insure the chronically ill who ruin rates in the standard market. Subsidize the Pools if we must, but it will be far less expensive than what we will have with any version of Obamacare.

There are a few “Captain Obvious” remarks in this article; e.g. insurers are seeing improvement in their results after rate increases, and 2018 may be good (paraphrased). What is not good is the higher premiums to be paid by consumers, and that will further exacerbate the death spiral. The market may improve, but in the end, taxpayers are going to be FORCED to pay the subsidies that allow some to keep their policy.

With no true mandate, now that TrumPresident signed an EO on DAY ONE to alleviate the burden of taxpayers from provisions in ACA, the enforcement of the penalty by the IRS is impossible, meaning less revenue from the uninsured, and so more tax revenue must be siphoned from other sources to prevent deeper fiscal deficits.

ACA repeal is inevitable. Only the date is unknown.

TrumPresident need not involve Democrats in ANY WAY to fix the mess they and their predecessors left behind. In fact, he needs to involve Republicans only to a limited extent, and deeply involve CEOs of HI Cos. to fix the mess using their experience and means which previously worked. TrumPresident needs to apply his negotiation skills and step aside for others to figure out the details. One detail that he should already know, but doesn’t seem to be following, is to leave Democrats out of the negotiations altogether.

Polar – The “seeing improvement in their results” also contemplates the government subsidies of almost 20%.

The only way they can possibly make money is by getting the govt subsidy.

Obamacare is dying and it is “death by a thousand cuts”.

integrity, absolutely correct. The American people have been bled by the cuts and it is time to do something different. Good thing Hilliary didn’t get elected. She wanted to expand Obamacare further, wasting billions upon billions in a failed law.

Yes, ‘im’, and some people commenting here seem to WANT to believe the death spiral doesn’t exist, and Republicans must fix the mess left behind by Dems. I hope NO POLITICIAN proposes anything similar to ACA. Instead, as I mentioned above, legislators need to ‘clear the way’ for HI Co. CEOs to start to fix the mess. Legislators need to create tx credits and other means to increase competition among health insurers AND increase the supply of medical care providers. I can’t go further with the details I’ve seen, but anyone who understands market forces will see an outline for a solution. Be clear, however, it doesn’t involve much political involvement, and does involve people who know how to fix things.

In Feb, the Market Place took away my subsidy. In March, they gave it back to me (I had in in Jan). A Glitch in the system. In the mean time, the carrier lapsed my coverage even though they are holding my feb & March premium and are declining to reinstate as they cant make a move until directed to do so by the Market Place. I filed an Appeal and lost even though the rules expressly state I have 90 days to catch the premium up. So, I filed for a Federal Appeal. In the mean time, because someone don’t read / understand the rules and because of a glitch in the system, I don’t have health insurance are due to no error on my part. RX re getting filled that need to be. Bills aren’t getting paid that need to be. This problem is all on their shoulders and could have been corrected with my appeal had whom ever made that decision been able to understand English.

Sorry, FFA. That shouldn’t happen to anyone. Makes you wonder how many others are struggling with the same type of problems.

FFA, the only thing I can say is you probably got the coverage through Healthcare.gov. Only the government can screw up something this royally. Had you applied direct with a carrier, they would have been able to find your payment and apply the premium and reinstate with no problem. This is why government should never be in the Healthcare business.

@FFA: you are, temporarily SOL. Hopefully, you realize the solution is to address the high costs rather than buttress them with subsidies. Good luck in getting the coverage you want.

I could give a darn about the Subsidy. The rules are pretty clear 90 day grace on premium payments. It wasnt lapsed but 10 days when I realized what happened. Called the carrier right away with what ever they say I was going to owe.

Got word today that my Federal Hearing is on May 15th.

Whaaa whaaa whaaa… The snowflakes don’t play nice.. the Trumpizoids don’t play nice.. Hilarious. It’s always somebody else’s fault as to why nothing gets done in the government. Just keep pointing fingers back and forth instead of collaborating as an industry to come up with a solution that makes sense and is affordable. The Senate and congress have no reason the try and find a solution because it doesn’t affect their healthcare plan. Do you think if they had skin in game that might change? Yet during my trolling of the comments on this topic I see none of you on either side of this little divide complain that they have a better FREE healthcare plan for life. Until that changes, they want you to keep drinking the Kool Aide you’re drinking…

I am getting tired of the ‘slanted’ articles against our president in the Insurance Journal. Obamacare (the Affordable Care Act)was not pushed through by President Trump, but by President Obama. It has never been ‘affordable’ except for those who are not paying for it. I’m not arguing this one article, but multiple articles lately that are biased against someone we should all be respecting and supporting. He is our president, and we live in a great country. You are supposed to be reporting, not pushing your bias on your readers. We come here for REAL news.

Angela, wonderful post. Great to see a woman who sees with clear eyes on what has been going on. Yes, the IJ has been pushing this agenda since the law was passed in 2010. I am pretty sure that the resident Progressive female troll Celtica will be along to insult you and down vote your comment.

Another thought that came to me when I re-read the title of the article… why are CEOs ‘struggling’ to plan for alternate scenarios?

    ERM, anyone?! Hello?!
