Earthquake Rattles Two Southeastern Oklahoma Towns

Oklahoma’s first earthquake of 2007 rattles two small southeastern towns, authorities said.

No damage or injuries were reported when the 2.5 temblor hit the western Coal County communities of Tupelo and Clarita about 3:46 p.m. Jan. 8, the Oklahoma Geological Survey reported.

City Clerk Milisie Postoake wondered if somebody had hit city hall.

“There were three of us in the building, and we all three felt it,” Postoake said. “We just looked at each other. It felt like somebody had lifted the building about an inch or two and just dropped it.”

Postoake said she and her 7-year-old daughter went outside to see if a tree had fallen nearby. She didn’t figure out what had happened until the next morning, Postoake said.

The quake happened about five miles south of Tupelo, just north of Clarita.
