Nashville, Tenn., insurance lawyer Kevin Doherty is the latest Democrat to confirm he is thinking about a run for the U.S. Senate next year.
Doherty, 47, said he’s seriously considering challenging for the seat now held by Republican Sen. Lamar Alexander.
“I realize Lamar is going to be very difficult to beat, but we Democrats need to give voters a strong alternative,” Doherty said.
Others considering a bid for the Democratic nomination include Mike McWherter, a Jackson businessman and son of former Gov. Ned McWherter, and Bob Tuke, a Nashville lawyer and former state Democratic chairman.
The three men have said they plan to try to avoid a contested Democratic primary. Doherty and Tuke said they would probably step aside if McWherter decides to run.
McWherter says he intends to make a decision as early as Labor Day.
