North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Wayne Goodwin reported the arrest of an Edgecombe County man. The warrant alleges Johnny Harper, Jr., 26, of Hobgood, N.C., collected two settlements for one auto insurance claim.

Goodwin said Harper was arrested by Department of Insurance investigators with help from the Edgecombe County Sheriff’s Office.

Investigators say Harper filed a claim with State Farm Insurance reporting that while his vehicle was parked and unoccupied, it was hit and damaged by a motorist who was insured by State Farm. The insurance company paid Harper $1,229.92 for damages. But, according to the investigation, Harper had already received out-of-pocket money from the motorist who hit him.

Harper is charged with one count of obtaining property by false pretense and one count of insurance fraud. He was booked under a $5,000 unsecured bond.
