Smile, Speeders: South Carolina Town Using I-95 Speed Cameras

May 5, 2010

Motorists zipping along a stretch of Interstate 95 South Carolina may soon find themselves on camera.

The Beaufort Gazette reported Sunday that officials in Ridgeland have inked a five-year deal to set up automated speed cameras in the town. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety says it will be the of its kind in South Carolina.

Radar will record a vehicle’s speed, and a camera will snap a photograph of a license plate and driver’s face. Tickets will be mailed, and drivers will be able to view footage online.

Officials say the cameras should be running later this summer. The posted speed limit is 70 mph.

AAA Carolinas spokesman Tom Crosby says the cameras could cause a bottleneck.

Ridgeland Mayor Gary Hodges says safety is his priority.
