A former insurance agent who has been active in Democratic Party politics has won her party’s primary for the Georgia insurance commissioner post and will face off against the incumbent Republican in the November election.
Another former insurance agent did well enough to qualify for a run-off to be the Republican nominee for one of the state’s the U.S. Senate seats.
In the insurance commissioner race, former agent Liz Johnson received 69.6 percent of the votes versus 30 percent for Keith Heard, according to unofficial figures from the secretary of state, with 144 of 159 counties reported.
Johnson will face Ralph Hudgens, the current insurance commissioner, who ran unopposed for the Republican nomination.
U.S. Rep. Jack Kingston, a former broker with Palmer & Cay in Savannah who has his CPCU designation, was one of the top two vote-getters in the Republican primary to be the party’s nominee for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Saxby Chambliss.
Kingston, who gave up his House seat to run for the Senate post, will now compete in a Republican run-off on July 22 against former Dollar General CEO David Perdue, the brother of Sonny Perdue, the former governor. Kingston won 25.9 percent of the primary vote compared to Perdue’s 30.1 percent.
The eventual Republican nominee will face the Democratic Party nominee, Michelle Nunn, the daughter of former U.S. Senator Sam Nunn. With 155 of 159 counties reporting, Nunn had garnered 75 percent of her party’s primary votes.
