So how many kids are killed everyday in car accidents?
How many die from playground accidents?
How many kids die everyday from everything combined.
The liberal grab is far reaching and guns are not the problem.
How about we ask about the mental status of the parents, are the parents prescribed any meds? do they actually take the meds?
How far do we want to take intrusion into the freedoms we have?
At some point people will stop going to the doctor if the doctor becomes the bad guy. Then how many will die because they didn’t go to the doctor? Maybe doctors will advertise that they don’t ask the questions. What a strategy that would be.

Yes, just what we need, a bunch of Dr’s with no knowledge of guns having an opinion as to who should and who shouldn’t have them. The best part is that these docs are so pompous as to believe that they know better than you or me if we should have one.
What about kitchen knives; the neighbors; a history of the patient’s house; background checks on all of the relatives, both sides of the family ?
Maybe the position is, if you don’t have a gun in the house, you have to go get one, because the kids aren’t safe, and then write a script for it !
“So, dad, little Johnny has a rash. Do you have a gun at home?”
I don’t care if they ask the question or not, but will it lead to more violations of our liberties and privacy ? Probably.

Own a gun, I don’t care. But, let me get this straight; in Florida, a doctor cannot refuse service for someone owning a gun, which can kill someone. Further, they can’t even ask the question about gun ownership. And, generally speaking, there are many on both sides that are okay with this. And, at the same time, there are some who are also okay with a bakery being able to refuse to bake a cake for gay people getting married. Which is going to make someone happy and fatter. Just an observation.

This is just another government intrusion on our rights provided for under the Constitution. If the government would only enforce the current laws on the books against criminals who use guns to commit crimes we would be a lot safer. No plea bargains no parole before the expiration of the sentence. Instead let’s go after the law abiding citizen.

Why should a doctor be allowed to ask such questions ? What if the answer is ‘yes’? And if the answer is ‘no’ ?
The whole issue of ‘guns’ is so blown out of proportion…….when the real evil doers are cars….

This says it all: “….Schaechter is among thousands of physicians, medical organizations and other groups such as the American Civil Liberties Union that challenged the law…”. If this argument was strictly about conversation between doctor and patient, I wouldn’t have a problem with my physician asking this question. However, with the Feds taking over healthcare, and the “other groups” now involved in this process, the right to privacy would no longer exist. Plus the influence that political bureaucrats would have on the eventual outcomes of gun confiscation (i.e. control)is too risky to allow.

Couldn’t agree more, beside, since when did gun ownership become the business of healthcare ?

      2lane,
Explain to me which part of healthcare is run by the government? Cigna just paid for my knee surgery, not Uncle Sam. You’ll love this, too. Cigna screwed up and couldn’t charge me for my portion of the surgery, so I only had to pay for the anesthesia. Knee scope surgery = $493.36. I have almost already met my $500 deductible for the year, nice! But, your talking point makes for a great Faux News soundbite and does a number to ruffle the uninformed feathers.

        Dude, CP….who’s the misinformed one?

Clearly you’re operating from an agenda angle, so let me make this clear: Regardless of who is “running” healthcare, the fact that the ACLU is involved in a situation like this points out exactly the politics behind this issue. How could you flatly ignore that part of 2lanelover’s point?

Owning a gun has NOTHING to do with pediatric care or primary care. It’s the parents’ responsibility to have conversations with their kids and to create a safe environment in their homes. Period. End of story. None of any doctors’ business at all. Ever.

Also, the CDC spit out that convenient statistic about 8-9 child/teenage deaths daily due to firearms. Again, WHY are they entering this conversation when it has nothing to do with general health and everything to do with personal responsibility? That doesn’t raise any suspicions to you? My family had guns in the house growing up, and I never knew they were there until I was in college. I still don’t even know where my parents keep them, and that’s the way it should be.

Corporal Planet (yeah: you’ve been demoted): if you sincerely believe that National healthcare (i.e. Obamacare)isn’t about CONTROL then you’re seriously delusional. The information gleaned from your care providers and the information shared between patient and doctor can and WILL be used Federal bureaucrats to manipulate the masses, whether it be gun control, what we will be allowed to eat, drink, of how we choose to live our lives .regarding risk, etc. Open your eyes, Corporal.

“eight children or teenagers are killed every day”

this statistic includes 18 & 19 year old gang bangers shooting each other over drugs and turf.
back those out and see what the real numbers look like.

In time, they may be allowed thru ACLU intervention to ask if the patient drove a car (manually) to their office, had unprotected sex, jay-walked to cross a street on the way to the clinic, sky-dive, rappel cliffs, water ski, snow ski, ride snow-mobiles, ride ATVs, drive a convertible, … my paws are getting tired typing out all these similarly dangerous activities!

If the doctors are so concerned, why don’t they give a handout spelling out their concerns, have the patient sign it AND give them a copy to take home so they can actually read what they signed if they wish.
