The beat goes on and the data brokers continue to get their way. Profit at OUR expense.

ID theft is a NATIONWIDE problem. EVERYONE in this entire country should be entitled to a FREE credit freeze. Why do we have to pay the data brokers to NOT sell our information to strangers without our permission? If this ISN\’T legalized extortion, than I don\’t know what is.

Contact your elected officials and DEMAND legislation that gives us the right to freeze our credit reports (for free) in ALL states, not just 27.

At least in WA someone is trying to do something. My NH Sen. John Sununu is fighting AGAINST our right to freeze our reports as businesses must be allowed to go use any tools that help them and their stockholders…. maybe he won\’t get re-elected next year.

Bravo! I applaud WA\’s legislature. I also 100% agree with Avery. The DEFAULT should be that our information be secure and \”frozen\” unless explicitly given permission for it to be accessed, and only for the purpose for which permission was [temporarily] granted. I feel it\’s also the responsibility of the credit reporting agencies to get permission by contacting the individual (live, in person, by phone) -and having some more secure method of authenticating me than \”the last 4 digits of the social security number\” or \”mothers maiden name\”… how rediculous! We\’ve a long way to go- but this is a start.

So what if you can freeze your accounts. Before you know it, your ID has been stolen and things charged to you and the only way you find out is by checking the 3 credit reporting agencies, which you can do for free once a year. Then you see things turned in to the collection agencies. Guess what, you already been shafted and your credit messed up.
Putting a freeze on your accounts only stops them from getting more. I’ve seen 3 people get 30 days in jail and $1200 fine, big deal if they think this is going to hurt the thieves. They need to put a minimum prison sentence of at least 5 years plus 1 day for this kind of theft. At least with 5yrs + 1 day they will be locked up for the 5 years.
The police departments don’t have the funds to investigate this kind of crime, so what gets done.
