What’s in a Blog? Blogging About What’s Trending – Part 3

By | April 9, 2013

This post is part of a series on insurance marketing and training sponsored by Astonish.

In part one and part two, I shared some secrets on what to blog about to attract web visitors to your website. This is the final piece of the puzzle. Are you ready? The last way to find insurance blog topics that drive traffic is to blog about what’s trending.

So, what the heck does that mean? Well, it means blog about what people are already searching for. This one is a little tricky because it means you’ve got to do some research, maybe even some keyword research. Don’t worry. It’s not as scary as it sounds.

There are so many ways to find out what news or pop culture people are interested in. One way is just to be observant of your environment. What TV shows, news, or celebrities are your friends and family obsessed with?

We’ve found that insurance blog posts related to pop culture do very well in terms of driving traffic to insurance sites. Consider the following examples – but don’t copy and paste them into your blogs, please. That would actually hurt your online presence since the search engines can now penalize sites with duplicate content. Penalize means lowering your rank in search results.

Pop Culture blog examples:

Broadway’s Spiderman and Workers Compensation

What Cartoons Can Teach You About Insurance

Walking Dead and Life Insurance

What’s great about these kinds of posts is they capitalize on what people are already interested in or searching for, which makes them catch readers’ attention. Even if people aren’t searching for what the Walking Dead can teach you about life insurance, people somehow find these posts, share them on their social networks, and that’s how they generate traffic.

When visitors share your blog posts on their social media networks, that’s akin to absolute gold for your website’s online presence because it shows the search engines the content is worthy of sharing, therefore gives the content more credibility. In fact, even linking to these blog posts in this blog post could boost these agencies’ presence online.

You might be thinking, that’s great but didn’t you say something about keyword research? Well, I did. Another way to add more power to your blog posts is by NATURALLY including words that people are searching for. One great tool to use to find those words is Ubersuggest. All you need to do is type in the topic you’re thinking about writing about and it provides suggestions of wording to include based on what web visitors are searching for.

It really IS that easy to start writing blog posts that get traffic for your website. Once you get the traffic, though, it’s up to you and the design, copy, functionality of your website to help convert them into leads.
