For richer, for poorer

CDI investigators recently arrested a Rancho Cucamonga husband and wife for alleged insurance fraud.

Richard and Janey Bonet were booked into the West Valley Detention Center with six counts of workers’ comp premium fraud and one count of grand theft a piece. Bail was set at $100,000 each.

An investigation revealed that the Bonets, doing business as Steel Master, allegedly obtained a workers’ comp policy through the State Compensation Insurance Fund (SCIF) in December 1995. The policy later was cancelled in April 2001 for failure to supply payroll records.

During the period of January 1996 through April 2001, the Bonets allegedly underreported their total amount of payroll and misclassified employees to avoid paying the proper amount of workers’ comp premium to SCIF.

The financial aspect of the investigation discovered a total of $567,794.34 in lost premium to SCIF due to the alleged false reporting.
