Florida prosecutors have dropped charges against a Hobe Sound, Fla., man accused of being the lead suspect in a $700,000 scam that targeted seniors by cashing in their insurance annuities.
John F. Cushman was accused of working with an unknown company insider in 2000 to scam seniors who held annuities with Massachusetts-based Keyport Life, now owned by Sun Life Assurance Co. of Canada. He faced 23 counts of grand theft and submitting false insurance claims related to arrests in 2001 and 2003. The arrests occurred after Keyport officials contacted the agents.
According to the Palm Beach Post, 13 Florida seniors–some of whom now are deceased–were victimized in the scam. Cushman’s attorney, Mitchell Tyre, said based on recent events, he believes the state charges might have been dropped so federal prosecutors could assume the case.
