The number of jobs Nationwide Insurance announced it would be cutting from its Portland, Ore., offices, as part of a plan to eliminate certain departments. Company spokesman Joe Case said more than 300 employees will remain in the Portland area. (AP)

Magnitude of the greatest earthquake that has shaken the Reno, Nev., area. The area has been subject to a minor series of earthquakes since late February. However, scientists are warning residents to take precautions, as it’s possible a larger quake is coming. Unlike aftershocks that get weaker over time, scientist said the magnitude of quakes in the recent series have been getting stronger.

Total number of claims resulting from the Southern California wildfires that burned in October 2007, according to the Insurance Information Network of California. A IINC poll of insurance companies representing nearly two-thirds of California’s homeowner insurance market found that they have settled 29,954 of their 33,789 residential claims from the October catastrophe. Claims tallies do not include damage to automobiles. The carriers expect those claims to ultimately total $1.47 billion, IINC said.
