Texas Insurance Commissioner Jose Montemayor is in the running for a high-level job in the U.S. Treasury Department, according to a report in the Austin American Statesman. Montemayor indicated that if selected by the Bush administration for the job he would consider moving into the position before his term as insurance commissioner expires in 2003. In addition to Montemayor, Wayne Abernathy, minority staff director for the U.S. Senate Banking Committee, is another candidate reportedly being considered to replace current assistant Treasury secretary, Sheila Blair.
