May 19, 2003

It only took 121 years, but the election of Garden City agent, Maura T. Clancy to lead the Independent Insurance Agents Association of New York Inc. is a landmark event for the organization.

Clancy, President of Clancy & Clancy Brokerage, Ltd. in Garden City, began her one-year term May 8 as IIAANY’s first female top elected official following her installation during IIAANY’s 121st Annual Meeting luncheon. As chair of the board, she is “the primary representative for the association’s more than 1,900 member agencies and their 18,000 employees. She oversees the organization’s activities, serves on its Executive Committee and reports to the board of directors,” said the announcement.

The IIANY also announced that during the Annual Business Meeting, which preceded the luncheon, the organization had elected and installed new officers and directors for the 2003-2004 term. In addition to Clancy, the following persons were elected to one-year terms:
— David R. Bauer, CIC, CPIA, Vice President of Robert F. Bauer Agency in Albany, was elected chair-elect of the Board.
— Mark J. Hagan, CPCU, ARM, Vice President of Perry & Carroll in Elmira was elected Secretary-Treasurer.
— Sharon H. Emek, Ph.D, CIC, a managing director of CBS Coverage Group in New York City, was elected Regional Vice President. Emek represents IIAANY members in the association’s Metropolitan-Suburban Region.

The announcement also noted that “Stephen R. Zogby, Vice President of Scalzo, Zogby & Wittig in New Hartford, returns to the board after a three-year absence to serve a two-year term as a Regional Director representing members in IIAANY’s East-North Region.”

He will join “newly elected Regional Directors Robert E. Sauda, CPCU, President of the Jacob Hauck Agency in Hamburg, and Neal L. Sullivan, CPA, Vice President of John Sullivan Insurance Agency in Mahopac. Both will also serve two-year terms. Sauda represents members in the West Central Region, while Sullivan serves members in the Metropolitan-Suburban Region.”

The IIAANY also indicated that the day before it had elected two new at-large directors – Jeffrey M. Yates, executive director of the Agents Council for Technology and former CEO for Industry and State Relations for Independent Insurance Agents & Brokers of America Inc.; and Alfred L. Austin, a Liverpool, New York-based regional vice president for Hanover Insurance Companies, to one-year terms.

“Yates works with agents, companies, vendors, user groups and industry associations to promote the effective use of technology within the Independent Agency System. Austin’s lengthy insurance career is marked by his tenure at Aetna Life and Casualty, where he managed the company’s West Coast National Accounts operation and New York City Commercial Underwriting operation. He also served as vice president of the company’s claims operation and head of Aetna U.S. Healthcare Southeast Region,” said the bulletin.
