May 10, 2004

The newly-elected leader of the Independent Insurance Agents & Brokers of New York Inc. is promising to put the full weight of the trade association behind efforts to restore the state’s once-healthy insurance market. David R. Bauer, CIC/CPIA, who is president of Capitol Bauer Insurance Agency Inc. in Albany, said IIABNY is well-positioned to explore new relationships and strategies in confronting a range of issues affecting the group’s 1,900 member agencies and brokerages. Bauer was elected to a one-year term as Chair of the Board during the group’s Annual Business Meeting, held at the Sagamore Resort in Bolton Landing, New York.

“We will continue to educate the public on insurance issues and carry on our long tradition as the unrelenting advocate for New York’s independent agents and brokers,” Bauer said. “But over the next 12 months, we will also intensify our work to engage the younger members of our association to become more involved in the industry and in this organization.”

During the Annual Business Meeting, IIABNY members also elected and installed new officers and directors for the 2004-2005 term. In addition to Bauer, other officers were elected to one-year terms:

· Mark J. Hagan, CPCU/ARM, president/treasurer of the Perry & Carroll agency in Elmira, was elected Chair-Elect.
· Sharon H. Emek, Ph.D./CIC, a managing director of CBS Coverage Group in New York City, was elected Secretary/Treasurer.

A slate of six member agents was elected regional directors. David L. Spiro, AAI, a principal of Spiro Risk Management Inc. in Valley Stream, returns to the board after a one-year absence. Spiro will serve a one-year term and represent IIABNY members in the Metropolitan-Suburban Region. James D. Sutton, chief executive officer of James F. Sutton Agency Ltd. in East Islip, was re-elected to the board for an additional two years. Sutton will also represent the association’s members in the Metropolitan-Suburban Region.

Also elected to two-year terms as regional directors are Christopher A. Brassard, CIC, Thomas F. Wallace Jr., CIC, and Joseph F. Pecora. Brassard, executive vice president of Ten Eyck Group in Albany, will represent IIABNY members in the East-North Region. Wallace, vice president of Personal Coverage Inc. in Saratoga Springs, will serve with Brassard in the same capacity. Representing IIABNY members in the West-Central Region are Pecora, executive vice president of Petrella Agency Inc. in Buffalo, and Joseph D. Falcone, AAI, secretary/treasurer of Dominick Falcone Agency Inc. in Syracuse.
